Open your Windows To USB application and from there, using the disk image when it asks for it, begin putting a Windows To Go on the hard drive. Go to Disk Management in Windows (Right Click the Windows icon in bottomleft) and for your hard drive, delete your primary partition volume (You should be able to tell by the space of the disk what device it is.) and reformat the unallocated space in NTFS, giving it a relevant name such as Boot Camp or Windows 10. (VMWare supports a simple drag and drop but other VMs might be more problematic).ĭisconnect and reconnect your hard drive so it is detected and mounted onto the VM instead of the MacOS, and from there you can begin the process of getting Windows on the drive.

Once Windows 10 is running and set up on your V.M., import the Windows Support Software folder, the Windows to USB application and the ISO image file onto the V.M.
Use the ISO Image to get Windows 10 running on your Virtual Machine (For VMWare Fusion it's as simple as drag and drop the ISO image into the Setup when it prompts you, just make sure the systems are as isolated as possible). (WinToUSB is the usual standard but has some compatibility issues with certain hard drives, I recommend Rufus 2.18 because that got around the compatibility issue and was on the whole quite fast.) You'll need a Virtual Machine to start off with (only temporary for the hard drive formatting / getting the right software and drivers on it).
It is quite a different and more complex method than the Apple-guided one, but I found this to be the best way for getting a portable Windows 10 on hard drive via Boot Camp: Ill walk you through it plain and simple, this was my personal experience with it and thanks to it, I now have a 4TB hard drive with Windows 10 and running perfectly.
